How to Become Better Organized for School

The start of a new school year is an exciting time. For some kids, the start of a new school year marks the beginning of their crusade against disorganization. As the year goes on, however, organizational plans that seemed perfect originally seem to fall apart. Take heart, though--there are ways that you can get yourself organized, and keep yourself organized as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out a pocket calendar at the beginning of the school year. Make sure to include all important dates, including extracurricular activities, family obligations, school scheduling details and important birthdays. During the first two days of school, make sure to mark down any dates that your teachers specify, including project due dates, exam dates or weekly quizzes.

    • 2

Set up your binder appropriately. Make sure you have one large divider for each section, and reinforce the holes on the divider. Carry a travel hole puncher with you so you can put your papers into the binder as soon as you receive them. Alternatively, keep a folder in each section so you can put unpunched papers into it as necessary. If one class includes a lot of handouts or other papers, consider buying some smaller dividers to break the subject into smaller chunks (for example, notes, homework, classwork, exams).

    • 3

Establish a routine. If possible, do most of your homework before dinnertime. Make sure you keep a consistent bedtime and work to finish your homework well in advance.

    • 4

Check your knapsack before you leave your home or school each day. When leaving school, make sure you have taken all of the necessary textbooks and homework; when leaving home, make sure you're bringing them all back to school.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get organized along with a buddy. Talk to each other about how your organizational efforts are going, and encourage each other as needed.

  • Avoid the procrastination bug. If something needs to be done, do it right away. At the very least, make a note to get it done later--and don't lose the note.

  • Becoming organized is not a one-time accomplishment. If you don't continue to work on your organization for school, you'll end up losing whatever you gained.
