Instructions

Start with rice paper. Rice paper is thin, translucent material that is edible. If you can't find rice paper, substitute vellum paper from a local paper store. Make sure that the vellum paper has not been colored, is made of non-toxic materials and can be eaten.

Decide on a design. Choose a design that you feel you can draw easily. Look for simple shapes such as butterflies, flowers, ribbons and hearts. Search the Internet for pictures of the item you have chosen. Print out the design that you like on regular paper.

    • 3

Place the rice paper on top of the picture you have chosen. The image should be clearly seen underneath the paper. Use edible markers to trace the design. Flip over the paper and copy the design on the other side. Let dry overnight to make sure the images adhere to the paper.

Gently brush clear piping gel over both sides of the images you are using. The piping gel will make the colors brighter. Do not worry if the piping gel smears. Let the gel dry until the paper becomes tacky but has not fully dried out. This can take from 12 to 36 hours. The material should cling to your fingers just a little. Sprinkle a bit of edible glitter over the top of the material to make it stand out.

Cut out the image from the paper with a pair of short, sharp scissors. Do not worry if there are still little bits of rice paper that can be seen. The paper will fade into the background when viewed from more than a few inches away.

Place the paper decorations on top of the cake with a drop or two of water or a bit of fondant. If not using the decorations immediately, store them in a tightly closed plastic baggy in a plastic container. Keep the decorations away from any source of moisture. The rice paper should last two weeks to a month.

Hi Stacy... My goal is to be able to just trace an image onto rice paper / wafer paper using food dye pens, then apply clear piping gel to the front AND back of image (the back to adhere it to the cake; the front to give it a shinier look), then cut the image out, put it on the cake, and that's that... If the image stays looking good, even after the rice paper has dissolved, that would be excellent!!... But, since I've never ever used rice paper or piping gel before, and I don't really know if I have any clue about what I'm saying or not... then, my question would be... if you're going to color the piping gel and then paint over the image, will the gel run? If so, how do you prevent that from happening? And is it better to use liquid food coloring or food dye gel to color the piping gel?
