Crochet can produce a quick, easy and adorable cupcake tree for a buffet in your home or on your kitchen table. Use crocheted cupcakes on your cupcake tree as pincushions, a holiday decoration or just a whimsical home accent. You can opt to crochet your own cupcakes for your crochet cupcake tree or use the tree to display sewn felt cupcakes, knit cupcakes or even cupcake and pastry-shaped candles.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose two to three cardboard rounds, each smaller than the other. Make a large cupcake tree with one 12-inch round, one 8-inch round, and one 4-inch round. Make a smaller one using one 10-inch round and one 6-inch round. Allow four to five cake pillar supports for each tier.

  2. Step 2

Make a loop, leaving a 6-inch tail to one side using any color you prefer. Begin crocheting into the loop with the working yarn. Work six single crochet stitches into the ring and pull the yarn tail to snug the ring. Work six increases per round until your flat circle is the same size as the cardboard round.

  3. Step 3

Decrease six stitches per round over two to three rounds. Gently stretch your crochet cupcake tree cover over each layer of the tree. Hot glue cake pillars into place evenly on each layer, then glue the next tier of the cupcake tree to the top of the pillars.

  4. Step 4

Make cupcakes for your cupcake tree by starting with the same loop and six single crochet stitches as you did for the cupcake tree layers. Work two single crochet stitches in each stitch on the second round. Single crochet one, then single crochet two into the next stitch around on the third round. Work two single crochets in every third stitch on the fourth round of your cupcake base.

  5. Step 5

Single crochet into the back loop of each stitch. Single crochet one round around. Space two increases evenly around each round for the next three rounds. Work one round even in single crochet.

  6. Step 6

Use your preferred icing color and work rounds one through four as you did for the cupcake base. Single crochet four rounds even. On the final round, make three single crochets in the first stitch, skip one stitch, then slipstitch into the next stitch. Repeat around the cupcake top. Sew the bottom and top of your cupcake together, leaving an opening. Stuff firmly and sew the opening closed. Add beads or buttons to decorate your crochet cupcake.
