How to Make Animal Masks Out of Construction Paper
Creating animal masks can be fun for kids and adults, whether the masks are for a special occasion or simply for fun. With a little time and a few craft items, you can turn construction paper into a simple but interesting mask. This project is suitable for nearly any budget; most of the items used are inexpensive and readily available at most grocery stores or craft stores.
Things You'll Need
- White craft glue
- Tan or brown construction paper
- Black construction paper
- Scissors
- Razor knife
- Large rubber band or large elastic hair tie
- Non-toxic colored markers
Instructions

1
Glue two sheets of construction paper together with craft glue or paste, making sure to spread the glue evenly along the edges and in the center. You can use one sheet if you choose, but the thickness of two sheets will help the mask last longer. Let the glue dry before continuing.
-
2
Draw an outline of the animal face on the construction paper large enough to fit across your child's face (or your face, depending on who will wear the mask). If you wish, you can use a animal face stencil, available at some craft stores or online (see Resources).

3
Draw a circle the size of a quarter near each cheek to indicate where you should staple the elastic or rubber bands later. This way, you won't staple them directly on the face and the staples won't be as visible.
-
4
Carefully cut along the lines of the drawing, and use a razor knife to cut out holes for the eyes, nose and mouth.
-
5
Snip a long rubber band or elastic hair tie to make it one long piece. Staple one end to one side of the mask (on the circle near the cheek).
-
6
Hold the mask against the face of the person who will wear it. Pull the rubber band or elastic hair tie around the back of the head to make sure it is long enough. Trim to fit and then remove the mask. Staple the loose end of the rubber band or hair tie to the other side of the mask.
-
7
Cut thin strips of black construction paper and attach them to the mask with craft glue to make whiskers. As these dry, use colored markers to add color to the ears and around the eyes.

Tips & Warnings
Cover the sharp ends of the staples with small pieces of tape to prevent cuts.
If the mask is for a child, use soft elastic hair bands rather than rubber bands. Hair can easily tangle in rubber bands. Do not let a child use a razor knife, stapler or scissors unattended.
