Sarong is a Maylay word meaning "covering" and is traditionally worn by both men and women in the South Pacific. Although sarongs have a rich history, they are becoming more mainstream, particularly as swimsuit cover-ups and casual skirts. Sarongs are essentially large pieces of fabric that are folded and tied in different ways and are very easy to make, even for the novice sewer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose a lightweight, woven fabric such as silk chiffon, cotton voile, or a cotton rayon blend.

  2. Step 2

Cut a rectangular piece that is approximately 72" x 36".

  3. Step 3

Fold one edge of the material to the unprinted or underside 1/4" and iron flat. Do this on all four sides of the material.

  4. Step 4

Fold the ironed edges in again 1/4" and secure with straight pins. Sew a straight stitch as close to the edge as possible, removing pins as you go.

  5. Step 5

Iron the hem of the finished sarong to create smooth edges. Wear as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • The shorter width of the unfinished material that you initially cut will ultimately be the length of your sarong. Measure 36" from your shoulder to get an idea of whether you want your sarong to be longer.
