How to Win Every Time in Monopoly
As proof that Monopoly is truly an American game, Hasbro, Inc. added a new game token this year: a money sack. It beat out the piggy bank and biplane. The 11 tokens now used in the classic Monopoly game are a boot, iron, racecar, top hat, thimble, battleship, cannon, wheelbarrow, dog, and horse and rider. These last three were added in the early '50s.

Keep an eye on other players. Don't let on if they take a property you really want.

Buy everything you can except Park Place and Boardwalk (blue properties); Atlantic, Marvin Gardens, and Ventnor (yellow properties); and Pennsylvania, Pacific, and North Carolina (green properties).

Buy one each of the blue, yellow and green properties to break any other player's chance at a monopoly.

Go for the Tennessee, St. James Place, and New York (orange properties) and Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky (red properties). They're more likely to be visited because of their locations on the board.

Try to get players to sell you property instead of mortgaging when they owe you money. Heavily mortgaged properties can be bought cheaply by other players who land on them.

Build up to three houses on each of your properties, but not more than that, for the best return.

Use the rules to your advantage. If you land on a property, don't automatically hand over the rent. If two people roll the dice after your turn and no one notices, you're off the hook.

The house rule my family always used was players in jail weren't allowed to collect rent or trade or do anything else like that. That gave an extra incentive to not sit in jail for three turns. The probability of landing on each space is NOT equal due to the Go to Jail square and the various Chance and Community Chest cards that direct the player to move to various squares. The side between Jail and Free Parking, plus the first half of the side after Free Parking, get landed on more due to people getting moved to Jail and having to start from that corner. Then there's the statistics of rolling two six sided dice, which all games using 2D6 rolls have in common.

When playing one of the computer versions, buy houses but don't upgrade to hotels. The goal is to force the competition to have to sell back hotels when all the houses are in play. Then when a hotel has to be sold to get out of debt, everything on that property group has to be sold. Those houses become "virtual", forced to sell for the money but then they're gone because all the real houses are in play. The player gets a big bunch of cash but cannot rebuild unless another player upgrades to a hotel and does not or cannot move the houses to another property. For this to work you must have the even building rule selected, otherwise the bankrupt player can just sell enough hotels (and the houses "under" them) to get out of debt instead of being forced to raze a whole property group.
