How to Make a Tank Top From a T Shirt

Most of us have an old t-shirt lying around that is either out of style or does not fit as well as it used to. Instead of throwing the t-shirt away, you can convert it into a tank top using some basic sewing skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the shirt inside out. Cut the collar and sleeves off of the t-shirt. Hem the raw edges where the collar and sleeves used to be.

    • 2

Thread one 4-inch piece of ribbon through the left arm hole of the shirt and pull it through to come out through the newly-formed collar. Tie the 2 ends of this ribbon together so that the bow rests on the shoulder, cinching the sleeve tight. Repeat with the right side.

    • 3

Sew one 12-inch piece of ribbon on each side of the shirt at the waistline. Tie the ribbons together in the back to cinch the waistline of the shirt.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut off the remaining material of the t-shirt below the sleeves, leaving a sort of tube top, and attach ribbon to the top of it for straps. Hem the ribbon on both ends using a zig-zag stitch to prevent fraying.
