How to Tell the Difference Between Dandruff & Lice

No one enjoys having an itchy scalp. Whether it is the result of dry skin, dandruff, or head lice, finding relief is necessary. Unfortunately, dandruff and lice may look similar to the naked eye, and both can cause severe itching. Properly identifying dandruff from head lice is necessary for effective treatment. Being able to distinguish between head lice and dandruff is quite simple and can be done in the comfort of your own home.

Instructions

    • 1

Note the areas of the scalp that are itchy. Lice tend to navigate toward the back of the head and around the ears.

    • 2

Investigate the head using good lighting, preferably during the day, where lighting is most optimal. Using a magnifying glass may help.

    • 3

Realize that lice look different from their eggs, which are called "nits." Initially, lice are translucent, resembling a grain of rice. After "feeding" or sucking blood, lice range in color from gray to reddish brown and range in size from one-eighth to one-fourth inch. The eggs are clear or white and stick near the base of the shaft of the hair near the hairline.

    • 4

Use a comb to separate a small amount of hair.

    • 5

Lift the hair up and flick it with your finger. Dandruff will easily fall away, or off of the hair, while the egg will continue to stick.

    • 6

Assess the situation. If you identify lice, immediately call your family doctor for professional suggestions on treatment and further care.

Tips & Warnings

  • Encourage your children not to share personal items, such as combs, brushes, hats or scarves, to help prevent lice from spreading. Routinely check for head lice in small children.

  • To prevent the spread of lice, do not return to work or school until lice has been effectively ousted.
