How to Report a Bad Business

You may want to inform other consumers of a business that has poor workers and management. It can be helpful to share complaints with the public on forums such as Yahoo! Business Reviews and the rants section on Craigslist.org, but if you experience serious accounts of fraudulent behavior from a company, you need to contact the Better Business Bureau and present proof to back up your claims.

Instructions

  1. How to Report a Bad Business

    • 1

Go to the Better Business Bureau's Web site and enter you zip code to find the bureau nearest you (see Resources). Click on the option to check out a business, then enter all of the information about the business into the required fields. Click on the "Search" button.

    • 2

Locate the business that you want to report. Read through any reports to see if the business is accredited by the Better Business Bureau. Find out if there are any similar complaints about the business. Finding similar complaints will be helpful to cite when you write you own report.

    • 3

Go back to the Web site's main page and click on the "File A Complaint" button. Select the answers to where the business is located, what your complaint involves and whether or not you're a military employee. Click on the "Next" button.

    • 4

Enter all information about the business so that it can be located on the Web site's database, then click on the "Next" button. You will be prompted to enter all information concerning the business a second time if the business does not appear in the database. You will then be presented with the closest office that will handle your complaint. Print out the office information to have for future reference, then click on the "Next" button.

    • 5

Enter your contact information, then click on the "Next" button. Choose the primary classification of your complaint from the drop-down menu. Write a brief and factual account of the fraudulent behavior or improper business practices in no more than 2030 characters. Be sure to refer to specific names if necessary. Be as specific and to the point as possible. Proofread your complaint once you're finished.

    • 6

Click on the "Next" button, and review your complaint and information once more. Click on the option to send your complaint. A representative from the Better Business Bureau will contact you within two or three days to discuss your claim and any further actions that you may need to take. For example, if your complaint involves sexual harassment, the representative will point you in the direction to create a sexual harassment lawsuit against the company.
