Instructions

    • 1

Meet the requirements to become certified as a polygraph examiner. To take a certification course, most schools require that you obtain at least an associate's degree from an accredited college. You might also need to meet an age requirement; many schools require applicants to be at least 25.

    • 2

Attend and graduate from a polygraph examiner training program. Covered topics may include polygraph techniques, history of the polygraph, polygraph ethics, legal issues and physiology related to lie detector examinations. The program you choose should be accredited by the American Polygraph Association. An example of a school you can attend is the American International Institute of Polygraph.

    • 3

Apply for an internship license through your state's Department of Public Safety. To obtain this license, submit to a background check and fingerprinting.

    • 4

Finish a one-year to two-year internship under a certified polygraph general examiner. At this time, you can then apply for certification as a general examiner. Your state's Department of Public Safety will hold a general licensing exam. The test will likely consist of a written and oral exam. If you pass, you will receive your certification.
