How to Learn Neuro Linguistic Programming
Neuro linguistic programming (NLP) is a methodology designed to help individuals control their nervous system and learn how to think and communicate more effectively. NLP consists of four primary concepts: rapport, sensory awareness, outcome thinking and behavioral flexibility. Rapport is an important aspect of interpersonal relationships, and NLP can provide the mental dexterity to develop strong relationships with others on both a personal and professional level. Sensory awareness analyzes perceptions and utilizes natural senses. Outcome thinking emphasizes ideas about what you want as a way to avoid negative thinking. Behavioral flexibility teaches how you can do something differently.

1
Begin your study by going to the library and checking out several books on NLP. Read the books and take notes in a journal about the important concepts. Go online and review some reputable sites about NLP (see Resources below for links).
-
2
Keep your journal with you at all times for approximately a week. As you go through the day, jot down notes and observations about opportunities where NLP would be useful. Write down your ideas for how you can implement NLP in your everyday life (both professional and personal).

3
When interacting with people, develop rapport throughout your exchanges---with service people, your friends, your coworkers and your family. Practice constructive communication.
-
4
Practice engaging your senses. Listen, look, smell, taste---the power of observation is very important in understanding your environment.
-
5
Listen to your own feelings, and practice controlling them. When approaching a situation where you feel very strongly about a subject, determine the desired outcome before beginning interaction with other individuals. Write down the desired outcome in your journal, and then proceed to communicate your wishes and desires.
-
6
Practice flexibility. Be prepared with a back-up plan when things don't work out as you wish, even despite your best efforts.

Tips & Warnings
Keeping a journal throughout your study of NLP can be very useful. If you don't want to bother with a traditional paper journal, you may keep one online in the form of a personal blog.
Seek out other individuals who are trying to learn NLP. Studying, discussing and practicing together with other like-minded individuals can be a great motivational asset.
As with most things worth learning, mastering NLP techniques will not happen overnight. Be prepared for a long and arduous journey, but keep the rewards of improved communication in sight to help you stay motivated.
