How to Reset a 2002 Subaru Outback OEM Without Unhooking the Battery

On a 2002 Subaru Outback with OEM equipment (standard battery and OBDII (on board diagnostic) connector), the check-engine light is an indication that a failure has occurred in one of the computer subsystems. The light can also be turned on by a signal from one of the computer's sensors. If one the sensors is faulty or something causes it to send a signal that is out of the normal parameters, the computer will sense that and turn on the light.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the code scanner into the OBDII connector port on the driver's side of the vehicle; the port is located under the steering column.

    • 2

Turn the ignition key to the run position and press the "Read" button on the scanner. In a few seconds the scanner will display a code. The code will lead off with a letter (such as a "P") followed by four numbers. Decipher the code with the code book that came with the code scanner. Cross-reference the numbered code for the explanation of the failure.

    • 3

Correct the problem before attempting to erase the code, or else the code will just return.

    • 4

Turn the key on again and this time press the "Erase" key on the scanner. In a few seconds, the scanner should display "Codes erased," thus turning out the check engine light.
