How to Make a Real Fruit Centerpiece
A beautiful centerpiece adds warmth and charm to your dining table. Many people choose a vase or basket of arranged flowers, but there are other options that are equally pretty. A centerpiece made from real fruit is economical as well as enticing to the eye. Coating the fruit with sugar before arranging it adds a sparkle to your centerpiece. Choose seasonal fruits or fruits that match a specific theme, such as green apples, red apples, cherries and limes at Christmas.

- Fresh fruit
- Superfine sugar
- Egg whites
- Whisk
- Pastry brush
- Decorative plate or charger
- Doily
- Greenery

Purchase the fruit that you wish to use for the centerpiece. Take care to examine each piece for blemishes and soft spots. Choose the most attractive fruit you can find. Smooth fruits, such as berries, cherries, apples, grapes, oranges, lemons and limes work best if you plan to coat them with sugar.

Pour the sugar into a bowl a shallow bowl.

Beat the egg whites until they are frothy. Use a pastry brush to paint a piece of fruit with egg white.

Roll the piece of fruit in the bowl of sugar until it is entirely coated. Shake off the excess sugar. Set the piece of fruit aside and repeat the process of frosting each piece of fruit.

Place the doily on the plate or charger. This will help absorb excess moisture. Arrange the fruit in a manner that you find pleasing. Generally, larger round fruits should comprise the bottom layer of the arrangement. Stack smaller fruits on top.

Tips & Warnings
You can find pasteurized egg whites in the refrigerated section of the supermarket if you would rather not separate eggs. Whir granulated sugar in a clean coffee grinder if you cannot find superfine sugar. Use a cake stand or silver tiered stand instead of plate.
Check the arrangement daily for mold. Discard any pieces of fruit that look questionable.
