Adding a wooden wine shelf to an existing cabinet or set of shelves is an excellent way to add storage for your wine to existing decor. Adding a shelf to an existing structure rather than purchasing or building a larger, self-contained wine rack lets you take advantage of existing furnishings and optimize the use of space in your home. With some basic woodworking skills and simple materials, you can make this design--it'll hold your wine bottles safe and secure until you want them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Board lumber (dimensions may vary)
  • Saw
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Carpenter's square
  • 1-inch half round trim
  1. Step 1

Cut a board to the dimensions needed for your shelf. These dimensions are dependent on the size of the cabinet or case where you'll be installing the wine shelf. For best results, make sure your cabinet or case can hold a shelf that is at least 12 inches deep--that's the depth of a wine bottle laid on its side.

  2. Step 2
    Marking the board.

    Marking the board.

Mark off the shelf every 4 ½ inches on the long side with a tape measure and pencil.

  3. Step 3
    Drawing the lines.

    Drawing the lines.

Draw a perpendicular line across the board with your pencil at each mark. To ensure the lines are straight, use a carpenter's square as your guide. Place the square against the long side of the board, line up the mark you made in Step 2 and then draw your line across the board.

  4. Step 4
    One-inch half-round trim.

    One-inch half-round trim.

Cut lengths of 1-inch half round trim with a saw to match the width of the board. Sand the ends of each piece when you've cut them. You should cut as many pieces as there are lines on the board.

  5. Step 5

Line up each piece of trim onto the lines on the board and nail them into position with finishing nails. Place your wine bottles into the spaces between the trim--they'll sit securely in position until you pull them out.
