How to Make Heat Pads
For a sore neck, an aching back, overworked muscles or a headache, few things match the comfort of a heat pad. Make one from materials you probably have around the house. Even better--make many and give them as gifts.
Things You'll Need
- Washcloth or hand towel
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Dry rice or beans

1
Fold the washcloth or hand towel in half, creating a rectangle. Line up the edges and sew together three of the four edges. Leave one of the smaller edges open. If hand sewing, be sure to keep your stitches small, even, and close together.
-
2
Turn your fabric inside out so it resembles a bag. Fill the inside about halfway with dry rice or beans. Your pad will nestle comfortably against the body if the filling has room to move around.

3
Tuck the loose ends inside the pouch and stitch the end of your new pad closed. If you're stitching by hand, make your stitches even, small and close together, leaving no gaps.

4
Heat your pad in a microwave for 1 to 3 minutes, watching it closely for signs of overheating. After removing it from the microwave, shake your heat pad a few times to ensure even heat distribution.

5
Apply to the head, neck, back or any area that needs warmth and comfort. On a cold night, you can even place your heat pad between your sheets before you go to bed, prewarming it for you.

Tips & Warnings
Mist your heat pad with water before heating if you prefer moist heat. Add dried herbs or drops of essential oils to the filling to add fragrance to your heat pad.
Washcloths and towels must be 100 percent cotton. Synthetic materials may melt or burn in the microwave. Children should only use heat pads under adult supervision.
