Instructions

    • 1

Examine your siding regularly for insect infestation. Woodpeckers feed off of ants, termites and bees that inhabit wood. Spray the insects and the surrounding area with an insecticide if they are present.

    • 2

Put 6-inch strips of reflective tape on your siding if you notice woodpeckers coming around. Space the strips every five feet or so. Woodpeckers steer clear of shiny objects.

    • 3

Put a large wooden post in your yard with bird seed attached to it. This should be enough to encourage the woodpecker to inhabit it rather than the side of your home.

    • 4

Attach an owl decoy on or nearby your house in plain view. Owls are natural predators to woodpeckers, so the decoys may be enough to scare them away. Keep in mind you must move the decoy around daily for this to work effectively.

Tips & Warnings

  • Woodpeckers are federally protected. If you harm them or disturb their nests, you risk getting hefty fines. You cannot legally remove a nest from your house if the woodpecker has established one there.
