Step 1
Put the butt of the putter on your sternum. The butt of the putter is at the end of the grip. Bend over so the putter can touch your chest and the ground. A proper fit is important with a long putter, because it needs to be the correct height to reach your sternum. If you have a mid-length putter, which is shorter than a long putter but longer than a regular putter, put the butt of the putter about 2 inches above your belly button.
-
Step 2
Put your hands on the putter handle and form them into your normal putter grip. You do not need to use a different grip with a long putter.
-
Step 3
Swing the club by rotating your shoulders to create a smooth pendulum type motion with the putter. You could also swing the club by taking your right arm back and pushing the club forward. You should see a remarkable different when swinging a long putter compared to a regular short putter. The long putter can be controlled better because the end of the putter is placed on your chest.

Step 4
Practice using a long putter before taking it to the golf course. Because you are using your shoulders more with a long putter, it is more difficult to control distance. Your shoulders generate more power than merely using your arms to swing the club. You need to get used to your new swing and get a feel for how far you need to swing the putter in the back swing.
