A Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) chart is a type of flowchart used to outline the decision-making processes involved in project management. While there are programs designed specifically for the purpose of creating PERT charts, these charts can be created using other productivity software such as those in Microsoft Office 2007.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open the Microsoft Excel 2007 program. If you do not have Excel 2007, use the link in the Resources section to access a free trial. After Excel launches, open a blank spreadsheet document.

  2. Step 2

Click once on the "Insert" tab on the top banner of Excel 2007. Click once on the "Text Box" option to the right of the "Inset" tab in the "Text" section.

  3. Step 3

Click once in the area of the spreadsheet in which you want to position the first box of the PERT chart. This action will drop a text box in the location you chose. Adjust the size of the text box by clicking once on any of the small squares or circles surrounding the box and dragging while holding down the mouse button.

  4. Step 4

Click once on the "Format" tab on the top banner of Excel 2007. Use the options under the "Shape Styles" section to alter the look of the selected text box.

  5. Step 5

Click once inside the text box. This action will place a cursor within the box. Type all of the necessary information for the particular step in the PERT chart. You can adjust the size of the box to accommodate the amount of text by following the instructions in step 3. Use the "Home" tab on the top banner of Excel 2007 to edit the appearance of the text within the text box.

  6. Step 6

Right click on the text box and select the "Copy" option. Right click in a blank area of the spreadsheet and select the "Paste" option. This will paste a copy of the original text box into the spreadsheet. Double-click once inside the text box to change the text. Use the information in steps 4 and 5 to adjust the look of the new text box.

  7. Step 7

Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the necessary number of steps in the PERT chart. After you have finished creating steps, click once on the "Insert" tab on the top banner of Excel 2007. Click once on the "Shapes" option in the "Illustrations" section. Select a connector style to use as lines to connect the boxes within the PERT chart.

  8. Step 8

Click once in the area of the spreadsheet in which you want to position the first connector of the PERT chart. This action will place the connector shape in the location you chose. Adjust the size of the connector by clicking once on any of the small squares or circles surrounding the shape and dragging while holding down the mouse button.
