Compact Flash (CF) cards are removable memory devices used with electronic products, such as digital cameras and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). About the size of a book of matches, CF cards are popular for their portability and solid construction. Advances in technology have led to a continuing increase in the capacity of CF cards, currently about 137 GB. You can install a CF card by following a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make certain that the device into which you want to install the CF card is compatible with your card. Check the devices owner's manual or manufacturer's website to determine the appropriate removable storage for the device. Most products that utilize compact flash as memory will have it listed directly on the device near the card's port.

  2. Step 2

Insert the CF card into the correct port on the device. Some devices may support more than one type of removable memory, so make certain not to insert the CF card into another type of port. As noted in the previous step, the device will have an image that shows the appropriate way to insert the card (e.g. label forward or away).

  3. Step 3

Use the menu function on the device to locate the CF card. Most menus will list the card under "memory" or "storage." After selecting the appropriate option, choose "format" in order to begin the process to make the CF compatible with the device.

  4. Step 4

Follow the instructions on the device to continue formatting the CF card. Be aware that formatting the card will erase all other data on it. If you have any type of data on the card that you don not want to lose, make certain to use a multi-card reader on your computer to transfer the material to a folder on your hard drive.
