Things You'll Need:
- Supportive employer and caregiver
- Double electric breast pump
- Milk storage bags and a Sharpie
-
Step 1
Obtain a high quality double electric pump which allows you to pump in about 15 minutes and includes a storage cooler. Your hospital, new moms' group, consignment store and Craigslist are sources for a gently used pump.
-
Step 2
Start pumping while you are still on leave. Use a Sharpie to mark the date and store milk safely in the freezer for 6 months. With practice, you can pump on one side while feeding baby on the other. Milk storage bags are available on line and at Target, Babies R Us and CVS.
-
Step 3
Let your employer know you will need a private spot to pump twice a day when you return. Keep a t-shirt in your desk to wear while pumping. Make sure your boss understands the heath benefits to your baby.
-
Step 4
Discuss your feeding plan with your caregiver. Does that person know how to safely thaw and warm your milk? When to discard unused milk? Will you supplement with formula at all?

on 10/10/2009 Moms should try to get at least 6 weeks maternity leave, this is so that they can get a good start at producing a full supply of milk.
