This article will help you avoid common resume mistakes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • White Printer Paper
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Avoid placing personal pictures on your resumes because it does not really demonstrate professionalism and it gives way to unscrupulous employers who may utilize this against you in accordance with your age, color, race, gender etc.

  2. Step 2

Do not use the word I in your resume. For example, you can state I worked in a refinery with other people. The professional manner of stating this fact is "Performed work as part of a refinery production team." There are always two ways to convey an idea. You should always utilize words that are professional and explain what your work functions actually were.

  3. Step 3

You should not be overly concerned with the type of paper you use. Employers prefer plain white printer paper as opposed to heavy stock or textured ones.

  4. Step 4

The preferred font is Times New Roman 11pt. When employers are shuffling through several hundred resumes they are looking for the content in the resume and not the appeal of the font.

  5. Step 5

Make sure to have your name, address, and phone number on your resume. I have come across resumes on occasion that lacked these key pieces of information to contact a potential candidate. You can lose out on a job opportunity.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to check for grammatical and punctuation errors.
  • Check that your dates of employment are correct and in chronological order.
  • Employers will never ask for a picture when sending a resume.
