learn to use a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff to take a blood pressure

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • stethoscope, blood pressure cuff.
  1. Step 1

The bell (round part) of the stethoscope is placed in the bend of the arm, towards the outside. It is best to find the pulse first, using your index and middle finger, then place the bell where you found the pulse.

  2. Step 2

Apply the blood pressure cuff to the upper arm. about 3 to 4 finger widths above the bend.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the air valve to the cuff is closed by twisting the metal screw looking thing and inflate cuff, do not go over 180 unless the person is known to have higher blood pressure.

  4. Step 4

Slowly release the air by twisting the metal dial the opposite way. Do this as slowly as possible and listen closely.

  5. Step 5

When you first hear a beat, that is the systolic number, or the number on the top. Keep listening. The last beat you hear is the diastolic number, or the bottom number. So if you hear the first beat at 130 and the last at 85 your blood pressure reading would be 130/85. Good luck
