How to Run a Hockey Offense: Odd Player Rush

The odd-man break is a common occurrence. In a three-on-two or two-on-one situation, the offense should know how to properly foil the defenders.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Hockey Sticks
  • Hockey Pucks
Step1
Skate the two wings and center with ferocity up through neutral ice.
Step2
Instruct the center, as puck carrier, to pass to the left wing.
Step3
Send the left wing across to center ice.
Step4
Crisscross the center to the left side.
Step5
Check the defense: it will likely concentrate on the alternating puck carriers on the left side, leaving the right wing uncontested in breaking forward.
Step6
Instruct the left wing to pass to the right wing before one of the defenders closes to check.
Step7
Break forward with the center and left wing in order to screen the goalie (block his sight to the right wing).
Step8
Shoot from the right wing.
Step9
Have the center and left wing be prepared for a possible rebound if the shot is blocked.
Step10
Scoop up the puck and shoot again.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your team happens to have a talented left-hander, play him on the right side (an off-wing) and let him take the breaking shot. The stick position just off center ice is a better shooting angle on the goalie.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity.

on 7/16/2006 If you see that a defense man (or two) are occupied or switching off the ice, take the chance (if you have the puck) to sprint down the ice. If a teammate has the puck call for it at the half line. If there is a lose puck, put all your might into it and sprint and move in on the goalie. No fancy moves or under-the-legs, take a hard wrist shot at the hash marks!

on 11/22/2005 Do not get too fancy with passing and make sure the odd man rush always produces a shot in the net.

on 11/22/2005 If you are on a 2-1, and have the puck, skate towards the defenseman, and criss-cross with your teammate. 9 times out of 10 the defenseman will follow you, leave the puck for your partner, who should be wide open.
