How to Obtain a Texas Paraprofessional Certificate

Working as a paraprofessional, or educational aide in a public school can be a very rewarding experience. However, you much have a paraprofessional certificate. If you live in Texas, you can obtain this from the Texas Education Agency through a fairly simple process.

Instructions

1. Obtain a job as a paraprofessional, or educational aide.

   You will not be able to apply for your first certificate unless you have an employing school district to initiate the process. Apply for and get a job as a paraprofessional, then the school district will enter information with the Texas Education Agency that will allow you to apply for the certificate.

2. Set up an online account with the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).

   Go to the SBEC website at http://www.sbec.state.tx.us/SBECOnline/default.asp At the main page, click on "SBEC Online for Educators." Then click on the link to open a new account.

3. Apply for a paraprofessional certificate.

   Once you are employed at a school district and you have an account set up, you need the school district that employs you to recommend you for a certificate. You can then apply for it at the SBEC website.
