For those of us that can not afford to travel by car or train or air, there is Hitchhiking.
Hitchhiking is the most chaotic and difficult way to travel, but also the most fun. Hitchhiking is the worlds least efficient mode of transportation, but it is also the best way to really experience an area. While hitchhiking you will meet people whom you will never forget.
"How to hitchhike... stick out thumb and let life happen." - William Steelman, my traveling partner.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Thumb
  • Sense of Adventure
  • Positive Attitude
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

    Decide Your Destination.

    Definitely the easiest step.
Usually you will find that you'll end up liking the trip more than the destination.
You could decide to just go somewhere. This will make your trip even more exciting. The less of a plan you have, the more time you have to experience life.

  2. Step 2

    Research Your Destination.

Check the hitchhiking laws and other laws, including squatting laws, drinking laws, laws on illegal substances and especially anti-poor laws.
There are several states in the US where it is illegal to hitchhike. Some people will tell you it is illegal throughout the entire country, this is incorrect.
Most police officers do not know the laws either.
For the most part, on-ramp hitchhiking is completely okay. Do NOT hitchhike on the side of an interstate, this will get you arrested or at least lectured.

  3. Step 3

    Leave.

This can be the most difficult step, but the adventure that awaits is definitely worth it.
Hitchhiking can be dangerous so always keep your wits about you.
Hitchhiking can be a lot of walking, so be prepared.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hitch with a woman, you'll move much quicker.
  • Direction signs, ie North, South, East, West, seem to work best.
  • Traveling in groups of more than two will making moving much slower.
  • Only take with you what will fit on your back.
  • Look clean but not too clean.
  • Sometimes you'll move quickly and sometimes you'll move slowly, always stay optimistic, and if you have to, walk to the next town.
  • Always travel armed, but not visibly.
  • Be very careful hitchhiking at night.
  • If it doesn't feel right catch the next ride.
  • Always have the stronger person sit behind the driver, that way if they try anything the strongest person is in the most dangerous spot.
  • Get in and then pull your pack in, never give them the opportunity to take off with your stuff.
  • Don't carry illegal drugs with you.
