Summer months brings rodeo season, 4-H, riding competitions, parades, and other events that require you to haul your horse to various destinations. Some of these destinations can be long distances away and you are riding in a nice air-conditioned pickup cab, but what about your horse? Here are a few tips to help you avoid causing dehydration, heatstroke or exhaustion to your horse.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plan ahead: If possible avoid hauling during the heat of the day. Travel during the night to reach your destination. Try to avoid traveling during "rush hour" traffic and getting caught in traffic jams.

  2. Step 2

Prepare your trailer: Open all of the vents and windows for good airflow. Don't allow your horse to stick his head out of the windows as this can cause serious eye injuries. Make sure the windows have bars!

  3. Step 3

Carry water with you: Have at least 3 gallons of water per horse available for fueling and rest stops. Many horses won't drink "strange" water and having your own water storage tank will help.

  4. Step 4

Park in shady areas and open areas if possible. Unload your horses and walk them for a bit when parked.

  5. Step 5

Avoid breakdowns by making sure your vehicle and trailer are in good repair. Check the tire pressure and have a spare.
