Step 1
First, make sure the items and produce you sell meets all the standards and regulations to be sold in your area.
-
Step 2
Next, find farmers markets within a distance you are willing to travel to sell your produce and make a list of potential markets. When considering potential markets, think about the distance, the size of the market, customers that will be going to the farmers market, and competitors for your products you will be selling.
-
Step 3
Visit each farmers market on your list to get first hand experience and a feel for how the market works.
-
Step 4
Start looking and applying for a farmers market early on in the year (during the winter months preferably). Farmers markets typically run spring to the fall and it takes a couple of months to apply to join a farmers market, so winter time is the best bet for an application.
-
Step 5
Know the application process. Some farmers markets require a membership to sell your produce and other items there, others are sponsored. With an application can come a fee as well or an interview with some farmers market.
-
Step 6
Finally apply to the farmers market. If you aren't accepted to join the farmers market that year, consider applying the next year! Many times farmers markets either try to keep variations in their supply or contain their size, so don't take any rejection seriously. Also, consider applying to multiple farmers markets, as you typically won't get accepted into all of them and this will leave you will several options.
