If you are thinking about creating your own home bar there are several essentials that you need to purchase. A good starter bar can be fully stocked with liquor, mixers, glassware and other various equipment for around 250 dollars.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 250 dollars
  1. Step 1

Starting with the liquor you will need to purchase 750ml of each of the following alcohols for your starter bar; whiskey, gin, rum (white), tequila and vodka. If you like you can buy premium brands, but to save money mid priced brands should at least be considered.

  2. Step 2

When buying mixers for your starter bar, you want to have at least cola, orange juice, soda water and simple syrup on hand. Other mixers may be added depending on what your favorite drinks may be. A few fresh limes or lemons, perhaps mint, will increase the amount of drinks you can create.

  3. Step 3

You will need to purchase glassware for your bar. Try to buy six highball glasses, six old fashioned glasses and six martini glasses. If you plan on drinking shots, purchase a few.

Try to find good solid heavy glasses to reduce breakage, but stay away from colored glasses and make sure that you will be able to replace any glasses that do break. So avoid close outs.

  4. Step 4

For your starter bar you will need a jigger (for measuring), a cocktail shaker, an ice bucket and tongs. You may also wish to purchase a muddler. You should pick up some bar towels for the occasional spill.

  5. Step 5

You will also want to buy a book on mixology, so you can prepare proper drinks. It is a common mistake to add too much alcohol to drinks prepared at home, something that you want to avoid.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use common sense when drinking and especially when serving others. Make sure no one drinks and drives.
  • You can purchase a blender, but unless you love frozen cocktails, the cost is not worth it.
  • Look into bartending sets for good value on equipment.
  • Don't waste money on buying a dedicated bar. Set up your starter on a side table or on a unused shelf.
