Step 1
lucky bamboo isn't always so lucky the frist one I had got sick and died, but then I did some research and now my new lucky bamboo can stay lucky! When you buy Bamboo first check to make sure the container is at least half-full of water.
-
Step 2
When you buy Bamboo first check to make sure the container is at least half-full of water. See if there are brown or yellow roots showing. Also check to see if the leaves are yellow, or the stalks are yellow or bruising. If there is soil in the pot, the soil should be wet not soaking or dry.
-
Step 3
Most Lucky Bamboo arrangements are grown in water with rocks. The Bamboo that is grown in water usually come in a glass vase. The plus side of using a glass vase is so that you can see the rocks in the water and keep an eye on the water level. The disadvantage is that your Bamboo might get more light then what it needs, which will probably cause Algae. Algae needs light to grow. So I suggest a container that you can't see threw.
-
Step 4
Believe it or not, but Bamboo needs to adjust to it's living environment, by doing this place it near a window, so that it's not directly in the sun light, but it's still getting some sun.
-
Step 5
When you bring it home and the water level is low don't put it near a window. If the plant is in soil, don't water it for two to three days. Let the plant adjust before giving it water.
-
Step 6
If you plan to keep the plant somewhere with very little light, move it farther from the window for a couple of days before moving it to it's final location.
-
Step 7
Lucky Bamboo is grown naturally in the rainforest of Africa and it grows in the shaded areas, that why if it is placed in direct light it could be harmful.
-
Step 8
If you want your bamboo to grow you will need to make sure it's getting a little natural light. If your bamboo is in water, it will grow well, but it doesn't like the chemicals, so no tap water, only filtered water or rain water.
-
Step 9
Keep an eye on the water level in your Lucky Bamboo container, and add a little more as it gets down to about half-full. About once a week, poor out all the water and refill the container with fresh water.
-
Step 10
Lucky Bamboo grown in soil should be keep slightly moist, not soaking wet. Do not allow it to dry out. Also you don't want to go by whether or not the surface is dry, often the soil on top will be wet, but the soil below will be dry, so stick your finger in and if the soil is dry a inch down then go head and water the plant.
-
Step 11
If your plant is getting pale after you've had it for a while, try moving it closer to light and give it some very diluted plant food.
-
Step 12
However, if it turns yellow shortly after you bring it home that's usually a sign it was over-fertilized before you purchased it. Change the water immediately, and don't fertilize at all for several months.
-
Step 13
The best time to feed your Lucky Bamboo is when you change the water. Just add some very diluted solution of plant food like Miracle grow. For water-grown plants, that means using 1/10th the recommended strength (i.e., if it says 10 drops per gallon, use only 1 drop per gallon for your Lucky Bamboo).
-
Step 14
If your Lucky Bamboo is growing in soil, you can use a stronger solution.
-
Step 15
Don't feed every time you change the water! Feed your bamboo every two months or longer. Water-grown plants do not need to be fed as frequently as soil-grown plants, and feeding too much or too frequently is more harmful to plants than not feeding enough!
