Decorating any kind of cake is a fun activitiy for bakers of all ages. Here's a delicious recipe for a soft fluffy icing to use for your next cake decorating adventure.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Ingredients:
    8 cups powdered sugar
2 cups solid shortening - spray measuring cup with nonstick cooking spray for easy removal
    3/4 cup half and half
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon of almond extract (or flavored extract of your choice)

  2. Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine powdered sugar, shortening and half-and-half. Beat at low speed until blended.

  3. Step 3

Pour in vanilla and almond extracts and continue to beat at low speed until all ingredients are blended.

  4. Step 4

Now turn your mixer on HIGH and beat icing for 5 minutes. This step is critical in creating the fluffy texture of this icing. Set your kitchen timer for 5 minutes and let the mixer do it's job.

  5. Step 5

Tint the frosting desired colors. I have found using paste food colors make the truest color. These can be found in the cake decorating aisle of many retailers. Frost your cake and enjoy!
