The possible names for a baby are endless; this makes choosing the best one a very stressful process. This is why many people resort to using a baby names book for suggestions. Following the steps in this article will help you find alternative sources that you can tap into to find the baby names that are most personally meaningful to you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider family names first. Your own family tree can be a great source of potential names for a baby. Dig up a list of your ancestors and see if one of them had a name you like. This is a great way to find baby names, because having a family name will give your child a sense of attachment to his own ancestry.

  2. Step 2

Make a list of the names of your favorite literary characters. Authors, like new parents, put a lot of thought into naming, this makes them a likely group to come up with some of the best names. Pick through your list of literary names to see if there is a character that you identify with or admire. If you name your child after this character, you will be creating an ideal roll model for your child.

  3. Step 3

Make a list of historical figures that you admire. Naming you child after an admired historical figure is another way to subtly indicate your expectations for your child. Your child will grow up with the same name as a great person, and this will communicate to him that he also has the potential to do great things with his life.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may be better off not to name your child after a living person, such as an admired politician. If the politician does some disgraceful act after you have already named your child after him, it's too late to switch, your child will be stuck with the name of an unsavory person for life.
