Things You'll Need:
- Comb
- Bobby Pins
-
Step 1
First, brush hair to make sure that there are no tangles that will cause bumps in the braid.
-
Step 2
If you want a smaller braid, begin closer to the forehead. If you want a bigger braid, leave about a half of an inch between your forehead and the braid.
-
Step 3
Divide three sections of hair at the top of your head where you want the braid to begin. Braid hair normally two or three times before beginning the french braid so that it will not come loose. (Normal braiding involves crossing the left piece of hair over the middle piece and repeating the same thing on the right side).
-
Step 4
Next comes the process of french braiding. Don't worry! It is much easier than it looks! On the side of the braid closest to your forehead, gather a moderately sized section of hair and add it to the section of the braid that it is closest to. Then, cross the section of hair under the middle section just as you would when braiding normally.
-
Step 5
Repeat step 4 using a section of hair that is opposite to the side that you just added hair to. If you find that it is difficult to separate equal pieces of hair, use a pick comb to assist you.
-
Step 6
Continue to braid while alternating both step 4 and step 5. When there is no more hair left to braid, secure it with two bobby pins. The best way to pin hair is to insert one pin, and criss cross the other one over it. Overlapping the pins will eliminate the possibility of the braid coming undone.
-
Step 7
Add a small amount of hairspray or mousse to eliminate fly-aways. French braiding is an art that becomes much easier over time. So if it does not look perfect the first time you try it, keep trying! It will get better!
