Do you have a new cat? Worried about leaving them for the weekend for the first time? Don't be cats can safely be left alone for the weekend if you take a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dry food
  • Extra water bowls
  • Extra litter box
  • Radio (optional)
  • Timer (optional)
  1. Step 1

You can safely leave your cat from one to three nights without someone checking on the cat, though they do like the human interaction. You can use a radio to create the illusion of human company. Just tune a radio to a soothing station and set the radio on a timer to automatically turn on and off each day.

  2. Step 2

Leave a large bowl, or two, of dry food in the cat's normal eating spot. Make sure there is enough food to last the entire time you are gone, with an extra cup for good measure. You can separate the food into two bowls in case something dirties one of the bowls. (My cat has been know to throw up in her food dish!)

  3. Step 3

Leave fresh water in bowls in several places just in case the cat overturns one of the bowls. Make sure one of the bowls is in its normal location. You can also use one of the refilling water fountains for pets that looks like an upside-down water bottle. But, I would make sure there was at least a second water source, as these can be turned over.

  4. Step 4

Make sure the litter box is clean with fresh litter. I suggest one for each cat plus one extra. Place the extra litter box in the same area that the other litter boxes are normally kept.

  5. Step 5

Leave safe toys available for the cat. An empty box or large paper (not plastic) bag will provide some entertainment for the cat in your absence.

  6. Step 6

Leave a house key and your contact information with a friend just in case you get delayed.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is best to start with leaving the cat alone one night and build to longer weekends. The cat will learn that you will return and have less anxiety.
