How to Treat a Puppy with the Parvo Virus

Treating a puppy with the parvo virus is very difficult and emotionally draining. While the parvo virus currently has a 50% survival rate, you have to realize there is no sure-fire cure as of yet. The best one can do is treat the puppy to the best of their ability.

• Pedialyte
• Chamomile Tea
• Minced Garlic
• Echinacea Capsules
• Peppermint Tea
• Syringe
• Heating Pad or blanket
• Honey

Instructions

1. Visit the veternarian. Once you have determined that your puppy has parvo, it is best to follow the instructions of your vet. If your vet feels that care is best supplied at the vet, that is probably the case. It can be costly, and the odds are still not great. If your vet thinks you can treat the puppy at home, the following steps have helped many animal rescuers save parvo-infected puppies.

2. Keep your puppy in one area. Parvo symptoms include extremely foul-smelling diarrhea and vomit. By keeping your puppy contained, you are also keeping the virus contained.

3. Isolate the puppy. If you have other pets, keep the puppy far away from them as parvo virus is highly contagios. Disinfect everywhere your puppy has been, and be sure and scrub down your hands, clothes and anything on your that has had contact with the puppy. Treating the parvo virus in your puppy will be hard work, and will keep you busy, most of the time cleaning.

4. Make a chamomile tea for your puppy. This tea recipe has been known to work excellent for puppies with parvo. Place one chamomile tea bag, and one peppermint tea bag into a cup of boiling pedialyte. Brew for three minutes. Add two capsules of echinacea, opened. Stir. Add a small hint of garlic and a spoonful of honey. Mix together and cool. This tea helps calm the puppies stomach, and provides immunity building properties. Give tea with a syringe into the inside of the puppy's cheek.

5. Keep the puppy warm, either on a heating pad, wrapped in heated blanket. or put the puppy near a heater. When treating a puppy with the parvo virus it is important to keep them warm as they will be losing body heat quickly and often will start shivering.

6. Rub honey on the gums occasionally. The sweetness provides the puppy with some energy. Do not try and force feed your puppy at this time, the diarrhea and vomit will become worse.
