The transition from elementary school into middle school is a big one and can require a little more effort to adapt. Of course, everyone strives to be popular! We all want to go to school and have an automatic group of friends that we can sit next to at lunch and ask for help if we have trouble finding a class or taking notes. When starting at a new school, or losing touch with friends over summer break, this can be difficult. Here are a few tips on how to be popular in Middle School for girls:

Don't lose touch with your friends over summer break. Try to stay in contact with your friends over the summer so you have a strong support group going into the new school year. You may end up switching social groups and making new friends down the road, but for now, keep your friendships strong to help you get through the first few weeks. Set up a place to meet when school starts, compare schedules, and set up a time to meet for lunch. Having at least 1 friend when starting middle school can help ease your anxiety.

Talk to everyone. Don't single out any one group of kids. Talk to everyone, popular or unpopular. Strike up a conversation about class, your teacher, shopping, etc. You should make it your goal to talk to a certain number of people a day. It's important to be well liked by all.

Participate in sports and other social activities. Being popular has a lot to do with getting your name out there. If you are athletic, pick a sport (including cheerleading) and get involved! If sports are not your thing, get involved with other activities and clubs such as Yearbook Staff, Social Chair, Fundraising, etc. Volunteer whenever possible.

Be confident. If you are meek and show that you are nervous, it will give the bully's the opportunity to pick on you. Be confident, stand tall, smile, and have fun. Even if you are nervous, never show that you are. If you find that you are getting picked on, tell your parents and teachers. There are normally ways to anonymously report bullying so find out your school's policy.

Offer your support to other people who you see are struggling. Middle School is a big change for a lot of people, so if you are finding the transition easy and making a lot of friends, try to help the kids who aren't so lucky. Help the younger or less popular students find their classrooms or give them a place to sit at lunch. Your good deeds will not go unnoticed or unrewarded.
