Wake Up Kids Who Don't Want to Get Out of Bed

It's not natural to wake up to an alarm clock or a voice demanding that you jump out of bed. If you are battling to get the kids out of bed and going each morning-here are nine steps to achieve the goal.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult with the kids. Make a wakeup action plan in advance. Organize clothes the night before. Plan a week's breakfast menu. Establish or modify bedtimes.

    • 2

Ask for input about their preferred method of waking up. Alarm clock, kiss or hammer? Ha! Ha! Humor is always good when dealing with touchy subjects. With laughter, kids relax and cooperate.

    • 3

Take a quiet half hour for yourself each morning. If you're calm and centered the kids will cooperate quicker than if you're tense, threatening and yelling.

    • 4

Create a happy mood. Turn on upbeat music. Music soothes, motivates and invigorates, and that's the mood you're striving for. The goal is happy kids jumping out of bed. Well, at least if they are not happy, maybe the music will get everyone up and moving.

    • 5

Open the shades. Soften your voice. Whisper in your child's ear: "Wake up sleepy head, wake up."

    • 6

Give 5 more minutes to snooze. Say something pleasant like: "OK, sweetie, you've got 5 more minutes to snooze."

    • 7

Turn on the lights, turn up the music and ask, "Do you know what time it is?" Give a nonsensical answer like: "I need these sheets for a tablecloth; the Queen is coming to dinner."

    • 8

If all else fails, sit in the middle of the floor and laugh. That will get their attention. They won't be able to keep their eyes closed if you keep giggling.

    • 9

Repeat this pattern as needed. Trust me, eventually they'll master the art of getting out of bed on their own. When they are grown with children of their own, they will appreciate your methods and use them.

Steps 5, 6 and 7 are life savers in our household. I wake our 7 year old daughter slowly like this. She loves yogurt and will often snuggle in bed eating it then call me to take it away and grab another minute or so of sleep. It keeps her happier and more cheerful in the morning and makes both our days go better. When she is on the bus and the high schooler is in the shower is my time to sit and reflect and enjoy a cup of coffee.
