The key to any good roofing job is the ridge cap. This cap is what prevents water from getting behind the shingles and penetrating the house. Ridge caps can be pre-manufactured or they can be cut from regular shingles. Once the roof shingles are nailed down, it is time to install ridge cap shingles to properly finish the job.   • Chalk box
  • Hammer
  • Roofing nails
  • Roofing tar

Instructions

      Place a ridge cap shingle on both ends of the ridge. Center the shingles so that the same amount of shingle is on either side of the roof. Mark the edge of the shingles on the front side of the roof. Nail them down so that they don't move.

      Snap a chalk line on the front side of the roof using the two marks made in Step 1.

      Install the ridge cap shingles, aligning the front edge with the chalk line. Place the first shingle flush with the edge of the existing shingles and nail it in the same spot as a regular shingle, one nail on each side of the roof. Continue nailing shingles until you reach the other end of the roof.

      Nail the final ridge cap shingle in place at the other end. These nail heads will be exposed since no shingle will be covering them. Dab a bit of roofing tar on top of the nail heads to thoroughly cover them.
