How to Safely Use Your Belt Sander

A belt sander is a electric sander that is fitted with a rotating abrasive brush. Belt sanders are used to sand, trim, level, and round surfaces. Belt sanders are reported to be trustworthy tools. But with all things you must take precautions. Below are safety tips you should use before using your belt sander.

  1. Step 1

    If you have to sand metal, remember that this will create a flare or spark. From this flare or spark a fire can be caused. The dust (sawdust)collected in the machine can catch on fire and ruin your machine. Even worst it can ruin your work area, and possibly burn you. Vacuum the dust out of your sander before you sand any metal. A vacuum with a hose will work very well when performing this.

  2. Step 2

    Because of the loudness of a belt sander, invest in some ear plugs are some other type of hearing wear that will keep your ears safe.

  3. Step 3

    Before you discard of the dust particles from your belt sander, make sure to unplug you sander from the wall. This also should be remembered when it's time to change the belt. Always double check to make sure your unplugged.

Tips & Warnings
  • To keep your belt on your sander clean. Purchase a Belt washing agent , or sometimes called a belt-cleaning stick from your local hardware store. Follow the instructions on using the belt washing agent to the T. If your washing agent doesn't come with any instructions, research it on the web before you perform this task
  • Not matter if you have a stationary or hand held belt sander, the above precautions still apply.
