Things You'll Need:
- Wild kitten in your yard
- cat food
- time and patience
- cat litter
- string and cat toys
-
Step 1
If there is a wild kitten in your yard, you may hear the pitiful meowing. Put out small amounts of kitten food or canned cat food. Sit a few feet away from the food. Sit as close as you can with the kitten still eating.
-
Step 2
Do this for a few days. Don't leave food out unless you will be away for more than 10 hours. Sit closer each time.
-
Step 3
You might put out a shallow litter box at this point. It sounds crazy, since the kitten is outside, but the kitten should train itself to use the litter.
-
Step 4
This is the hardest part. Skip one or two feedings. Put out a small amount of food and sit right next to it. You will see the kitten waver between fear and hunger. Stay next to the food. This requires time and patience. When the kitten does approach and eat, sit quietly.
-
Step 5
Repeat this 3 times a day for a couple days. Then gently pet the kitten as it feeds. Repeat this for a few days. Add play with a string or cat toys now.
-
Step 6
Now is time to call the vet and make an appointment. Put the kitten in a cat carrier and take it to the vet for shots and to find out about spay or neuter. Get the kitten spayed or neutered before it is 6 months old.
-
Step 7
Enjoy your companion. Your cat may be more comfortable with you when you lay down on the floor or on the bed.
