How to Create the Dominican Hair Technique on Natural Hair

The Dominican hair technique is popular amongst Latinos, African Americans and those with curly to kinky coily hair textures. Dominican hair techniques are known for are known for getting curly to kinky textured hair as straight as a chemical relaxer, without the chemicals, however, and with much more volume. It is advised to use the Dominican hair technique with caution if your hair is in its natural state because it can be extremely damaging if done too often and if excessively high heats are used on the hair dryer and flat iron. The products used in Dominican salons are hair care products from Italy and Dominican Republic.

Things You'll Need:

  • BPT Wheat Germ Shampoo
  • Silicon Mix
  • Magnetic rollers
  • Hand-held blow dryer
  • Hooded blow dryer
  • Lacio, Lacio
  • Boar Bristle Brush
  • Large tooth comb
  • Saran wrap
  1. Step 1

    Wash your hair thoroughly with BPT Wheat Germ Shampoo to remove residue and clean the scalp. After the hair is washed you will need to deep condition your hair using the Silicon Mix prior. Allow the conditioner to sit for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse and prepare to style.

  2. Step 2

    Detangle your hair starting from the ends of the hair working up to the roots using a lifting motion in preparation for the magnetic rollers; for longer hair the grey rollers are used, for medium lengths the purple and red rollers are used and for short hair red and light green are used. Allow the hair to dry under a hooded dryer for several minutes depending on the density of the hair; normal dry times are 40 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  3. Step 3

    Remove magnetic rollers one by one. Once all of the rollers have been removed use the Dominican leave in conditioner Lacio Lacio; apply throughout the hair strands and brush with a boar bristle brush in a circular motion around the head until all of the hair is wrapped in one direction around the entire head. Saran wrap is often used to secure the hair and is the key to obtaining volume.

  4. Step 4

    Sit under the hooded dryer; normal dry time is 15-20 minutes. Once the dry time has elapsed comb out your hair using a wide tooth comb.

  5. Step 5

    Use the hand held blow dryer is used with a boar bristle brush to blow out the roots of the hair for lift and volume. The hair dryer is often set on the highest setting and is directed at the base of the roots while brushing the hair in an out and up direction. If the heat is uncomfortable at any point lower the setting and continue the process.

  6. Step 6

    Complete the final wrap around the head using saran wrap. The hair remains wrapped for 20 minutes under a hooded dry set a low setting. Once removed a flat iron is often used to lift the roots and add the swang many African American women attempt to achieve with relaxers.

  7. Step 7

    Comb your hair out with a wide tooth comb and use your fingers to lift the roots; tilts the head in a downward position to add volume. The Dominican hair technique is now complete.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use heat sparingly.
  • Be careful when using heat on natural hair; it can be very damaging and cause permanent damage to your coils and curls.
