Accept a Google Groups Invitation That Was Not Sent to a Gmail Address

You've gotten an invitation to join a Google group, but it was not sent to a gmail address. Then, when you click on the link in the invitation, you see a screen telling you to sign in to your gmail account. You don't have a gmail account but you go ahead and sign up for a gmail account, thinking that will get you access to the Google group.

Now you're signed in to your gmail account, but the Google group page wants you to ask to join the group. That makes no sense because you just received an invitation to join the Google group.

What's going on here? The Google group should be welcoming you with open arms, not giving you a hassle. The problem is that Google doesn't know about your other email address. The Google group thinks you might be an interloper. To solve this problem, follow the steps below to tell Google about your other email address and avoid running into this snag in the future.

Things You'll Need:

  3. Step 3

Click on the "Edit" button located below your email address in the area for personal settings. Clicking the edit button opens a page where you can edit your personal information and associate additional email addresses with your account.

  4. Step 4

In the box labeled "add an additional email address," type in the email address used for the Google groups invitation and then click save.

  5. Step 5

Sign out of your Google account.

  6. Step 6

Go back to the Google groups invitation in your email and click on the link again. This time, the Google group should welcome you to the fold and allow you to immediately start reading and posting messages to the group.
