Instructions

    • 1

There is no prelicensing education requirement to get your Texas adjusting license. You do, however, have to take the Texas Department of Insurance Prometric exam, or a course approved by the Texas Department of Insurance.

    • 2

If you are required to take the Texas adjuster test, you will go to the Prometric website (linked in References) to schedule your exam. Prepare for the exam with materials about adjusting, using the Texas insurance bulletin linked to below, or by taking an adjuster prelicensing course.

    • 3

Take the exam. Be sure to bring your ID and follow any rules you received in registration materials.

    • 4

After completing your exam, all applicants are routed through NIPR, an online licensing database. You will have to fill out your insurance adjuster application form here. If you are a non-resident, you'll want to have your home state license number ready, as a license from a reciprocal state can exempt you from the exam requirements.

    • 5

You may be subject to fingerprint and criminal history requirements before you can get your adjusting license. Fingerprints may be taken at the testing center.

    • 6

Your renewal notices will come by mail, so be sure to update the department of insurance if your address changes.

    • 7

Be sure to keep up with your yearly adjuster continuing education (CE) requirements. You don't want to have to start the process over again!

Tips & Warnings

  • The more experience you have, the better you'll do as you seek your adjusting license.

  • If you are just working in Texas because of a hurricane or other catastrophe, you are considered a catastrophe adjuster and can obtain a temporary license, which is a much easier process.

  • Don't let your license lapse

  • Don't lie about your criminal background. They check.
