Choosing the proper Flea Medication, not only protects your pet but you as well!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

***THESE PRODUCTS ARE PREVENTATIVES. THEY DO NOT CURE OR 100% STOP ANY TYPES OF DISEASES, AND ARE NOT VACCINES OF ANY KIND.

Choosing the right medication for you is not as easy as it seems. There are plenty out there, but few will get what you want done. I will explain the following:

    1. Frontline Top-Spot for Dogs and Cats
    2. Advantage for Dogs and Cats
    3. Advantix (For Dogs only!)

Fleas Can carry Tapeworms. Can cause Flea allergy Dermatitis. Cause red bumps, itching, scratching, biting. Can kill pet if not taken care of.

Chewing Lice can kill pet if not taken care of. Can provoke hair loss, redness, 'flaking' skin.

Ticks Only known cause of Lyme Disease

Mosquitoes Only known cause of Heartworm Disease

  2. Step 2

Depending on what you are looking for this is a quick overview of the following medications (All Topical Solutions!)

    1. Frontline Top-Spot Dogs -- Kills Adult Fleas (prevents reinfestation), Kills all stages of brown dog ticks, American dog ticks, lone star ticks, and deer ticks , as well as chewing lice. Depending on where you live, this is one of the most valuable solutions out there. Generally comes in a single dose, or a three pack (each dose is good for one full month) so it's quite convenient. This solutions works in about twelve hours, and is fully water-proof after roughly two days. What this means is that, no baths, or no swimming for about 48 hours, otherwise the solution could wash off. How this works is that the topical solution is applied in-between the shoulder blades directly on the skin, and is spread throughout the body through the oils on the skin.

This is a great product because not only does it provide help for fleas (a common nuisance) but ticks and chewing lice as well. Ticks are the only cause of Lyme Disease, so it is a wonderful preventative, but not a vaccine. Lyme disease can have some of the following symptoms:

    I. Lethargy -- energy level is down, Eating and Drinking down, sleeping more than usual.
    II. Fever
III. Lameness -- quite painful for Dogs, causes an Arthritic Joint pain.

It is recommended that if you think your dog has Lyme Disease, to immediately refer to your local Veterinarian.

Frontline Top-Spot is a weighted medication. Depending on the weight of your dog, there is a correct product for you.

***For Example - 76lb Chocolate Lab -- Frontline Top-Spot 45-88 is the proper medication for you.

VERY IMPORTANT : FRONTLINE TOP-SPOT CAN ONLY BE USED BY PUPPIES/DOGS OVER THE AGE OF 10 WEEKS, unless recommended by your Veterinarian.

    1. Frontline Top-Spot for Cats -- Kills Adult Flea, Kills all stages of brown dog ticks, American dog ticks, lone star ticks, and deer ticks, works in about twelve hours and is water-proof after roughly 48 hours. A topical solution, so easily applied in-between the shoulder blades directly on the skin.

Frontline Top-Spot for Cats is not a weighted medication, rather it has an age limit. Unless recommended by your Veterinarian, no kittens/cats should be on the medication unless over the age of 8 weeks.

VERY IMPORTANT : FRONTLINE TOP-SPOT CAN ONLY BE USED BY KITTENS/CATS OVER THE AGE OF 8 WEEKS, unless recommended by your Veterinarian

  3. Step 3

    2. Advantage for Dogs -- Protects against Adult fleas as well as killing larvae in about twenty minutes, chewing lice, becomes completely active after about twelve hours, is water-proof after about 48 hours. This means no baths, or no swimming otherwise there is a risk of the solution washing off. How this works is that the topical solution is applied in-between the shoulder blades directly on the skin, and is spread throughout the body through the oils on the skin.

Advantage generally comes in a single dose, or a four pack. Each dose is good for one full month. It is a weighted medication and depending on the weight of your dog, is the medication that would be sufficient.

  4. Step 4

*** VERY IMPORTANT: DUE TO THEIR CATS INABILITY TO METABOLIZE CERTAIN COMPOUNDS, K9 ADVANTIX MUST NOT BE USED ON CATS.

Permethrin is the base product in K9 Advantix, this is a compound that is quite toxic for cats. Signs of toxicity generally show after about six hours of application.

    3. K9 Advantix -- Is a five way medication that protects against the following:

    I -- Fleas
    II -- Ticks
    III -- Chewing Lice
    IV -- Mosquitoes
