Things You'll Need:
- your pet rat
- rat treats (preferably cereal)
-
Step 1
Hold a rat treat up to the bars of your pet rat’s house, while gently calling his or her name. It is best to use a dry treat, such as non-sugary cereal. Give your rat the treat when he comes up to get it.
-
Step 2
Repeat the first step for about a few days to a week until your pet rat consistently comes to get the treat. This training makes for great playtime for you and your rat.
-
Step 3
Move the training outside your rat’s cage. Only hand over the reward when your rat comes to you when you “call” his name, as opposed to him just wandering towards you randomly. Continue this exercise for about a month and eventually your pet rat will be trained to come when you call him. Just make sure to reinforce this behavior every now and then by providing the treat as a reward.

on 9/23/2009 Aww, Jared. I know what it's like to lose a pet rattie, and it's hard! I lost one when she was just a baby. I took her to the vet and everything but it was too late. Thanks for your input, and hopefully you will get another pet rat soon, if you don't have one already!
