As essential as diapers and bottles, a burp cloth is standard supply in the diaper bag. If you want to keep your own clothes clean while burping and tending to junior, you'll probably drape a burp cloth over your shoulder before patting away at junior's back. If you want to look really cute during the process, or at least, as cute as possible, considering the process, custom machine embroidered burp cloths are definitely eye-catching. They also make great gifts for mom/baby, and they're very simple to embellish on your home embroidery machine.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Home embroidery machine
  • Working knowledge of machine embroidery
  • Thread
  • Self adhesive stabilizer
  1. Step 1

Make or obtain burp cloths. Your favorite infant supply store should stock burp cloths or have the ability to order them for you. Optionally, you can purchase soft, sturdy, absorbent fabric/material and make your own. (Keep in mind that the center strip is generally thicker than the outer strips.)

  2. Step 2

Hoop self adhesive stabilizer and peel away the backing paper.

  3. Step 3

Position one end of the burp cloth on the hoop and press snugly to adhere. You may pin the burp cloth to the stabilizer for additional security.

  4. Step 4

Insert the hoop on your machine. Select your embroidery pattern, and begin stitching.

  5. Step 5

When the embroidery machine is finished with the pattern, remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the burp cloth from the hoop and excess stabilizer.

  6. Step 6

Optionally, you may use Fabri-Tac, or your favorite washable fabric glue to attach decorative ribbon. Once the glue dries a bit, you can further secure the ribbon with a couple of simple straight stitches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Traditional hues of pink for girls and blue for boys are complemented well by browns and white.
  • Including the baby's name in the embroidery pattern can make the burp cloths a lasting piece of memorabilia as well as the natural utility of the item.
  • If the burp cloths are a gift for an as yet unnamed baby of unknown gender, you may choose to use greens or yellows in your patterns.
  • Blocks, footprints, rattles, teddy bears, ducks or other baby animals are all common pattern choices.
