First of all a poor man's patent is simply, just a postcard you send through the United Postal Service. Just print a copy of the product you designed on it. Address the postcard to your self. Once it comes back stamped by the postal service it is a "Poor Man's Patent. Risk is the design going out, and maybe not returning. But it is the cheapest way.

A better way to get a patent is to go to Lulu.com. Download a picture of your product. Then make a calendar, T-shirt, coffee mug whatever they offer. You design what it is you want and printed on it copyrighted by your name and date. You pay for it. Then Lulu.com sends your design on the product you chose, this is a legitimate patent plus it is copyrighted and no one else can steal it. We spent $40.00 on ours. I am going back to school for Small Business Management. Then we will go public with our product.

This is a common misconception. Mailing postcards with your ideas on them or printing T-shirts with your invention might make for a great story... but a horrible patent. If the USPTO has never heard of you or your idea (i.e. you don't have a patent number from them), then you ain't patented. It is true that PUBLISHING your work may preclude others from patenting it, so THEY cannot patent it, but it is now free domain and anyone can use your idea, thus ruining the idea of patenting for protection. Furthermore, a T-shirt that you wear around your basement with your idea on it is not an official publication. It has to be something like a conference paper or scientific journal. You can publish your work and you have up to one year to patent it after you publish or you lose that right forever. Sorry for the lecture but this is just plain FALSE!
