These are instructions for changing gears on a classic internal hub three speed bicycle.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

While stopped, move the shift lever to first gear. The shift lever is usually mounted on the handle bars, and has a control cable connected to it.

  2. Step 2

Start pedaling. Once you get going fast, your feet will start turning the bicycle pedals faster and faster. When you're feet are having trouble keeping up with the pedals go to the next step.

  3. Step 3

Stop pedaling. You can't pedal and change gears on a three speed bike at the same time. If you do you'll mangle the gear assembly.

  4. Step 4

Switch the gear lever to the next highest gear. This will make it easier for your feet to keep up.

  5. Step 5

If you get going even faster, you can stop pedaling and switch to third gear.

  6. Step 6

When you slow down, or start going up a hill, stop pedaling and use the shift lever to shift into a lower gear. This will make it easier to pedal.
