Not only are homemade mashed potatoes easy to make, but they're also a lot less expensive than the store bought kind (and tastier too). Here is a very basic recipe so that you can make your own mashed potatoes from scratch.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 lbs. Potatoes
  • 1 Cup Milk
  • 1/4 Cup Butter or Margarine
  • Salt & Pepper to Taste
  1. Step 1

Peel the potatoes and cut them into quarters.

  2. Step 2

Put the potatoes into a large pot and add enough water to cover them.

  3. Step 3

Bring the water to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Cook for 10 - 15 minutes.

  4. Step 4

Use a fork to check the firmness of the potatoes and when they are done, drain the water off of them using a colander.

  5. Step 5

Put the cooked potatoes into a large bowl and mash them with a fork or a potato masher.

  6. Step 6

Add milk and butter and continue mixing - either by hand or with a mixer. Add more milk for smoother mashed potatoes.

  7. Step 7

Add salt and pepper to taste.

Tips & Warnings
  • Start with a small amount of milk and add more as necessary. It's easier to thin the potatoes than it is to thicken them!
  • For chunkier potatoes, mash them less.
