Long-haired cats can become very matty, snaggy, and otherwise tangled. This is how I try to gently get the mats out of my longhaired's fur.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • brush
  • possibly flea comb
  • small scissors
  • detangler, rub on if your cat doesn't like spray
  • deft fingers
  1. Step 1

Gently start brushing your cat to let her know you are not trying to hurt her. Gently go over the mats once to loosen them a little

  2. Step 2

Try to loosen the looser mats with your fingers

  3. Step 3

Spray some detangler or rub some creme rinse diluted in water over the mats and gently rub in. If needed, let it sit a few minutes to further loosen the mats.

  4. Step 4

Gently brush out the mats until you can go over kitty's whole coat without getting caught on any snags. If necessary, use a flea comb too.

  5. Step 5

If some of the mats are too tough to brush or comb out, gently cut them out with the scissors. My cats do not like the sound of electric clippers. Rebrush the whole coat until it is smooth. Kitty will look nice and fresh and be very proud of her lovely fur.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your cat is in a good mood before brushing or detangling.
