How to make your own hummingbird nectar, and how to clean the feeders. I have been enjoying hummingbirds for years now. They still always seem to mesmerize me. With this simple recipe and a few additional steps in caring for your feeder this is a great start to enjoying hummingbirds.
recipe:

1/4 cup of sugar
1 cup of water
boil so the sugar melts. let cool. Then you fill your feeders.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • water, sugar, pot and a stove
  1. Step 1

Making hummingbird nectar is the most easiest thing to do. Please when making your nectar follow these steps and you will have happy little hummingbirds.

  2. Step 2

Your feeders must be changed every 5 days. Do not let nectar sit in refridgerator more the 2 weeks. We don't want the nectar to ferment, you might get drunk little hummers. Seriously always check your nectar to make sure it is fresh. Also sign of decay of the nectar will be white specs in it.

  3. Step 3

    * I have read that hummingbirds like the shade, but I have been very lucky with the feeder in the sun outside my window. By doing this my feeder does reach above 90 degrees and that means I need to change my feeder every two days.

Tips & Warnings
  • Please note this is very important, when changing your feeder clean with hot water. Never use any mild cleaners or detergents. Also when making the nectar do not use food coloring to change the color of the nectar. Although mild cleaners and food coloring are not dangerous to us, it can make a little hummingbird very sick or unhappy. We must remember we are at least 300 times the size of them. So just a little something different can affect them.
